Thunder Finalize Training Camp Roster

Wichita, KS (October 7th) – The Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League announced today the final roster for training camp, which got underway this morning at 10 a.m. The Thunder will carry 28 players at camp including nine players who are returning from last year’s squad. Several new players were announced today including forwards Jeff Martens and Jake Hendrickson and defensemen Nick Schneider and Zack Firlotte.

Martens, 30, returns to the states after playing overseas a year ago. He split time between the Friesland Flyers in the Netherlands, recording 27 points (13g, 14a) in 29 games and the Newcastle North Stars of the AIHL, scoring 67 points (31g, 36a) in 28 games. He began his pro career in 2010-11 with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the CHL, tallying 34 points (15g, 19a) in 52 games. A native of Fort McMurray, Alberta, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound forward went on to play for both Allen and Arizona the following season where he had a combined 26 points (13g, 13a) in 50 games.

Hendrickson, 24, enters his first year as a pro after a four-year career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth of the WCHA. A native of Savage, Minnesota, Hendrickson was a member of the 2010-11 NCAA Championship squad. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound center had 26 points (12g, 14a) in 138 career games at the NCAA level and was also an ironman having played in 93-straight games from 2010-13.

Schneider, 28, comes to Wichita after playing last season for the Fort Worth Brahmas of the CHL. The fifth-year pro out of Maplewood, Minnesota has also spent time in Evansville and Dayton when both teams were a part of the CHL along with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the IHL, who won the IHL title in 2009-10. His best season came in 2010-11 when he recorded 18 points (5g, 8a) in 64 games in Evansville. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound defenseman played his college hockey at the University of Connecticut, recording 27 points (6g, 21a) in 138 games. 

Firlotte, 27, starts his second year as a pro after playing last season for the Arizona Sundogs. A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound defenseman had 10 points (1g, 9a) in 52 games in his rookie season. Before turning pro, he played for Acadia University of the CIS from 2007-11. In 125 games playing for the Griffins, he had 24 points (6g, 18a) and 204 penalty minutes.

Thunder training camp is open to the general public all week long and will conclude with an exhibition game on Saturday, October 12th against the Tulsa Oilers at 3 p.m. at the Wichita Ice Center. The Thunder will also host its 5th annual golf tournament the following week at Willowbend Golf Club on Monday, October 14th and Opening Night on Friday, October 18th against Rapid City, presented by the US Army and Subway. On Saturday, October 19th,  the annual Block Party will rock the house, presented by Toyota and the US Army. Details on the Block Party will be announced this week.
